Silverton NSW
Arrived in Broken Hill yesterday and it is still very cold but there are plenty of shops here including MacDonald's.The caravan park is called Lakeview and is OK but small sites so you are very close to your neighbours, at the back of us is a couple from Mandurah! We went to hear a bush poet last night who was very good and had some funny stories, there was quite a crowd there including a couple who had the same hats on but she had a pompom and guess what....they were find Walley hats!!! I said to Dave just remind me that we are never to wear the same clothes as each other. We were so snug in the caravan last night, the heater is amazing. We also had a nice chat with Trudy and it was good to hear her voice. Today we went to Silverton which is about 25kms west of Broken Hill, it is supposed to be a ghost town but there were some houses that looked inhabited. The Silverton pub is quite famous and has had many names over the years, it has also featured in the movies Mad Max and Priscilla Queen of the Desert to name a couple. Apparently it is also one of the towns that did well in mining and had its own railway as the railway stopped at Broken Hill so The Silverton Railway Company was formed to provide a link between them and South Australia, apparently it made a fortune. We went to the coffee shop and they had heaps of antiques which I thought were very cheap and you could buy what you wanted. We also sat at a table with 2 men Bill and John, Bill was an old digger and very interesting to listen to. He suggested we try Quandong pie, the cafes most popular dish so we had a piece each and thought it quite nice. Apparently the fruit is only found around here, it had the texture of rhubarb and was not too sweet. We then came back into town to do some grocery shopping at Woolworths. Hope you enjoy the photos, there is one of Dave in a car which the body is covered in bottle tops.
